Sharp's Plasmacluster technology
Positive and Negative Ions Purify the Air

Powerful because it uses Plasmacluster

  • Suppresses the effects of airborne viruses.
(Proven through experiments conducted in a 1 m3 box)
  • Breaks down and removes allergens such as dust mite feces and dead dust mites
  • Breaks down and removes airborne mold and suppresses the proliferation of adhering mold.
  • Removes odors that adhered to curtains, sofas, and other objects.

● Although products equipped with Plasmacluster technology provide functions that suppress airborne viruses, and break down and remove allergens such as dust mite feces, and dead dust mites. They do not create a sterile state and thus provide no guaranteed protection against infection.
● The actual antibacterial and purification effects vary depending on the conditions in the room and how the product is used.

Plasmacluster health technology—only from Sharp

Plasma discharge generates and emits the same positive and negative ions that occur in nature. Plasmacluster technology is Sharp's original air disinfecting technology for suppressing the effects of airborne viruses, and breaking down and removing airborne mold. Sharp patent (granted under patent No. 3680121)
Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, 2008 Awarded the「Invention Prize」 for「Air Purification using Plasmacluster Ions」at the National Commendation for Invention Prizewinners

Mechanism for removing bacteria from the air using Plasmacluster
(for illustration purpose only)

Ion emission
Plasma discharges are used to create and release into the air the same positive and negative ions that occur in nature.
Effect on mold and viruses
Only when the ions come into contact with the surface of a mold spore, bacteria or virus do they transform into OH radicals with extremely powerful oxidation properties. The OH radicals instantly steal hydrogen (H) from the proteins on the bacteria surface, breaking down the proteins.
Ions turn into water and return to the air
The combining of an OH radical with hydrogen (H) creates water (H2O), which returns to the air.

Long-living ions spread throughout the entire room.

Applying a plasma discharge to the moisture and oxygen in the air generates positive and negative ions. The layer of water molecules that form around each ion ensures that they are long-living.

Because these ions are identical to those that occur in nature, safety is assured.

Plasmacluster Ions are the same type of airborne ions that occur in nature, and their working mechanism is fully understood. Therefore, their safety is ensured.

  • (1) Identification of ion type
  • (2) Elucidation of ion's working mechanism (Dr. Gerhard Artmann, Aachen University of Applied Science, Germany)
  • (3) Confirmation of ion safety
We have recorded highly reliable safety data using testing facility compliant with GLP* (good laboratory practice) standards.
Purpose Test name (abbreviated) Ion concentration setting
Skin irritancy (normal-level) Acute skin irritancy and corrosivity testing Approx. 1 million/cm3
Eye irritancy (normal-level) Acute eye irritancy and corrosivity testing Approx. 13 million/cm3
Genotoxicity (normal level) Inhalation toxicity testing (assessment of genetic impact on lung tissue) Approx. 7 million/cm3
  • ● Testing facilities: Mitsubishi Chemical Medience Corporation
  • ※ GLP (good laboratory practice) is a designated standard for testing facilities, procedure manuals, etc. It is designed to ensure reliability in safety evaluation testing for chemical substances, etc.
